Peace Silver Dollars 1921- 1934

The Peace Dollar was introduced in 1921 as the successor to the popular Morgan Dollar series. The new design was created to commemorate the restoration of peace following the conclusion of World War I.

Designed by Italian-American sculptor Anthony de Francisci, it was the last U.S. dollar coin to be struck for circulation in silver.  According to Francisci, the image of Liberty was based on his wife Teresa Cafarelli de Francisci.

A portrait of Miss Liberty is on the front of the coin.  She has flowing hair and a radiant crown on her head.  The inscription LIBERTY appears above, and the date appears below.  The motto IN GOD WE TRUST is in a straight line, interrupted by Liberty’s neck.

The back of the coin features an eagle perched on a rock.  An olive branch is clasped in the eagle’s talons and rays of sunlight emanate from the lower right.  The inscription E Pluribus Unum – which is Latin for “out of many, one” – appears on the back.  E Pluribus Unum was once the motto of the United States of America and references the fact that the cohesive single nation was formed as the result of the thirteen smaller colonies joining together.

In 1980, the bull market in silver bullion sent the price to nearly $50 per ounce.  This happened when Hunt Brothers tried to “corner” the silver market.  Before the US government stepped in and disallowed the purchase of silver contracts on the commodity future’s markets, the price of investor grade Peace Dollars was pushed to almost $100 per coin.
